The Mama Bus

QUIT COUNTING! We’ll save you the time: There are 11 kids, aged 15 and younger!

Why go back to school when we could go cross country instead?

Who?

Hiya, we’re so glad you’ve found us! We’re two families with more kids than sense and a passion for real world education combined with a contagious wanderlust.

Lois and Jenn are the Mamas.

We’ve sipped a lot of tea and knit a lot of socks and hosted more than one intercontinental Skype conference in the planning of this trip. We’ve shared laughter, tears, survived pregnancy, childbirth, potty training, home schooling, teen-a-tude and much more, so why not share a road trip of a lifetime too?

Between us, we have 11 kids, from pre-schoolers to high schoolers, and we’ve home schooled every last one from birth to beyond.

  • Jenn’s Family is in their fourth year of full time travel through The Edventure Project.
  • Lois’ Family is fabulously grounded, developing a sustainable micro-farm in the hills of central New Hampshire.
  • Our lives seem like polar opposites, but in all of the ways that matter, we’re the same sort of Mama.

We’re married to amazing men who are handing us our dream in the form of fabulous families, the freedom to raise them the way we most want to, and the gift of a month (or so) to drive across the country and back, Thelma & Louise style… with a twist!

What & When?

This September, instead of cracking open new books we’ll be slamming van doors as we take our educational show on the road and fulfill a life-long dream to drive across the USA.

It’s going to be a road trip of epic proportions, but it’s not just for our families.

We’re going to share it with as many people as possible!

  • We’ll be writing and podcasting from the road.
  • We’ll be creating a series of mini-documentary style videos of “field trips” from the cool places we visit.
  • We’ll be highlighting the best of the best for family road trips as we go.
  • We’ll be sharing inside information about how to make your own epic family road trip a reality!

Check out our “Get On The Bus” page and get on the bus!

Where?

We’ll start with our feet in the Atlantic Ocean.  We’ll drive ’til we can put our feet in the Pacific. Then we’ll turn around and come back.

In between we’ll visit National Parks, historical sites, museums, factories, little known wonders, family, friends and so much more!

The fun part is that our followers get to help determine the route and the experience and have a chance to join us for part of the journey!

We’re currently taking suggestions for places to stay, things to see, educational experiences to be had and more!

Why?

Because it’s our dream.

Because the best way to learn is by doing.

Because our big kids are growing up WAY too fast.

Because we want to share it with others.

Because it’s our dream!

Won’t you join us?

  • Hello Mamas! I was just randomnly reading a MOMYS digest and saw your link. Our family just returned home from a 6 week “out west” trip and I’m super excited for you. Though living on the road can get a little tough at times as you know, I was so sad to come home to reality. You are in for the trip of a lifetime!! I just wanted to give a little ‘plug’ for Zion National Park in southern Utah. It was our favorite as we like to hike (and no bears!). We found Yosemite to be the busiest place on the planet and Glacier in Montana amazingly quiet for such gorgeous natural beauty. Anyways, have a blast! God bless the Mama Bus!

Sarah, Thanks SO MUCH for your suggestion and your well wishes! I don’t know if we’ll be able to swing Utah on this trip, but if we do, Zion won’t be missed… one of my favourites too!

Hi from Philadelphia! We have 4 homeschooled kids (5,5,7, and 11) and a Victorian house near U of Penn. We could put up most of you and find space nearby for the others (tiny yard not so good for camping!!) Phila. really is great for US history, art, urban farming, and more and really we’d just love to meet you!! we also have a cabin in upstate NY (Ithaca) if you find yourself that way, just email me. Happy travels!!!
